Season 2 will bring amazing musicians and composers from all over the world. In each episode, our host explores a different culture by playing and interviewing musicians from Alberta. This second season has the support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
New Music Paths is back! This season we will be bringing new amazing musicians and composers. Canadian music can be so diverse! Every Thursday, we will be sharing a new episode exploring Canadian composers and their unique sounds. We would like to extend our big thank you to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for their incredible support, which made it possible for us to showcase Albertan musicians from various cultural backgrounds who will surprise you with their music. Our host, musician and composer Denis Nassar will interview and play with each guest making this season a multicultural journey through music.
Come discover the wonderful music of the Indian Canadian musician Sharmila Mathur. In this interview Denis and Sharmila talk about the many unique aspects of Indian music and how it differs from western music.
Sharmila shows how the indian scale and hundreds of musical modes work and talks about their function in society. She is an outstanding Sitar player and is the disciple of the Grammy Award winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. A special thanks to Sharmila’s students Chaitanya Gautam and Anirudh Mangotia who played tabla in these performances.
Meet Dr. Jeremy Brown! He is a multi-award-winning musician and conductor that navigates both the Jazz and Classical music worlds with much excellence. In this interview, Denis and Jeremy play a beautiful song called Stella by Starlight together and chat about important elements that shaped Dr. Brown’s career as a successful and renowned musician. They both talk about Jeremy’s love for new music and the fact that he has commissioned and performed more than a hundred new works from Canadian composers. Dr. Brown plays saxophone, flute and clarinet at a professional level and has performed with renowned orchestras and ensembles.
Brazil-Canada Connection - John Reid & Denis Nassar
What happens when a Canadian Jazz saxophonist/flutist meets a Brazilian pianist? One of the possible outcomes is the duo called Brazil-Canada Connection. A bit of samba and choro with some jazz seasoning is definitely a recipe for fun! John Reid & Denis Nassar explore a variety of folkloric Brazilian rhythms and styles that were influenced by jazz and take the audience through a fun musical journey from the south to the north of Brazil. In this video you will hear some of their beautiful music and a fun chat where they share a little bit of their experience playing together and discovering the richness of Brazilian music.
Chinese Music | Paula Pang & Frank Yuen
Come discover some of the wonderful Chinese music being done in Alberta, today we will be visiting the Calgary Chinese Music Development Association (CCMDA) .
Meet Frank Yuen, Erhu player and president of the CCMDA, and Paula Pang, an award-winning Guzheng player and educator at the CCMDA. Together with two members of the Chinese orchestra, Dean and Janet Turta, they share with us some beautiful music and talk about the Chinese music scene in Alberta and in Canada.
Modern Times Project | Thom Bennett and Band
Get ready for some awesome jazz with world-class musicians! The Modern Times is a jazz project that experiments with a diversity of flavours from a variety of musical backgrounds. In this interview, you will hear originals and arrangements from the renowned drummer and producer Thom Bennett, who is also the founder of the project.
Thom Bennett is a professional musician, producer, recordist and educator based in Edmonton. He has toured throughout Canada, the US and Europe, has shared stages with the likes of Tommy Banks, Kathleen Edwards, Harry Allen and Aaron Neville and performs regularly around Western Canada.
